FAQ: How can I support Ting Dong?
Thank you for asking this! This site is our hobby, and the bills are paid from our pockets. A lot of time and love goes into this site. FAQ: What do you use to translate?
Luna: In the beginning, I used to do my translations completely based on dictionary definitions. However, after having studied Chinese language as long as I have now, I now only use the dictionary only as a reference and for words I know but have never seen used in the context in the song.
Miki: I'm still very n00b. First, I translate each word using a Chinese-English dictionary to get the literal meaning, then figure out the context of the song. My mum gets a lot of silly 'what is this?' questions from me.
FAQ: How long does a translation take to do?
Luna: That depends on the song. Some songs are relatively simple and I can do them in one sitting. Others require more thought; sometimes I can only translate to a point where I'm forced to stop and reflect on the song's meaning. Some time later, I come back and finish up. Some songs can even stump me completely.
Miki: Takes me way too long. My Chinese/Japanese is not very good.
FAQ: Can I put your translations on my site?
Making a decent translation is a time consuming and thankless task, where the only reward is enjoyment. Please don't suck the fun out of the hobby by disrespecting the translator. If you just want two or three, that's fine, but please provide due credit and a link back to our site. If you want more than two or three, we have to say no.
FAQ: What if I get special permission?
With special permission, anything is possible, but please note that none of the translations on the site should be considered completely set in stone. As we are improving our translation skills or continue to listening to a song, so too may our interpretation of the song's lyrics change. Likewise, some older songs on the site may be out of date and are in great need of a revamp. This is why we feel you would benefit most from our site by referencing and/or linking to it, rather than copying and pasting the lyrics elsewhere.
FAQ: If I send you the pinyin, can you translate the song?
Luna Frankly, no. Pinyin is limited in that it's designed only to describe the pronounciation of a word, not a word itself. I can read pinyin with or without tones, but that doesn't mean I can understand the meaning of it. On the other hand, I can read and understand hanzi. Honestly, you're best off sending me a song title in either hanzi or pinyin with translation and letting me search for the song lyrics myself.

FAQ: Why are there no Cantonese translations here?
We are currently unable to offer translations of Cantonese-language songs, and apologize for the lack thereof.
